Subject: RE: needing guitar lessons
Message: Hey there!

I'm a teacher with a studio of about 70 students. I'd love to help you, maybe we can even work together. Here's the deal.

Lots and lots of teachers and schools would like for your child to be enrolled in piano at that age. It really helps with the music theory aspect, the digital (finger) dexterity needed is not yet completely there, and guitars (even the smaller ones) are usually too big. That being said, you can still try enrolling your child for lessons.

I've found that there is a maturity aspect that all parties need to consider -- parents, child, and teacher. It's been my experience with children of this age that they will promise all the discipline but really can't know what that discipline takes. This isn't something like math or spelling, the child really has to work at it -- repition. Curiously, at this age they're really determined to get to the next level in the video game, not so much on the instrument.

There's hope! Know that there are books geared for this age group, Mel Bay amoung them. Also, try Hal Leonard -- they publish great curriculum.

Call me if you'd like more info. Or look me up on the web.
