We are new to TX and just took our 2001 Ford Expedition into the Ford dealership for an oil change and complete inspection as this car is paid off and we want it to last until it just won't go anymore (and we absolutely cannot afford a car payment in our household). Unfortunately Ford handed me a "need to do" list totaling $2,000, so we are wondering if anyone knows of an honest mechanic where we could take my car in for a second opinion/quote. Ford was nice enough to itemize every item they say needs fixing with the price and they prioritized them as well.
Blessings in Christ,

Danny,
I would appreciate a quote so much! Here is a list of the items that Ford says needs to be done and in order of importance:
1. 30K mile service - this is a service they say needs to be done every 30K miles and includes the flushing of all lines and fluids and refilling with all new fluids (transmission, etc).
2. Rear Emergency Brake, 1 axle seal, silicon, fluid and friction modifier - these are all related to my emergency brake that does not work at all. They say it doesn't work because my axle seal is worn and the fluid leaks. This was a really large ticket item!
3. Differential service - ??
4. Lower ball joints - they claim these are shot and effect the "ride" of my vehicle and need to be replaced.

I did have Ford replace my front brakes and I bought a new battery at Sears as my car was dying about every other day and I was having to carry around a battery starter so I wouldn't get stuck somewhere with my 3 year old and 6 month old.
I would appreciate anything you've got to share about a quote and the work that needs to be done and maybe you could also tell me how much time it would take.
Thanks so much!
Megan

Hey Megan,
I just recently had some work done on my vehicle and loved the guys at MD automotive...you know the ones with the cute jokes on their sign? They work off 78 or 79 dollar labor an hour and are all ASE certified. Its a part family owned business and they are all very sweet! I had some serious work done, and they truly are very honest.

megan,
let us know what you ended up doing and how it went. I have a ford explorer that needs some work and I too am looking for a good mechanic. All of these ones listed above seem very good, but I would like to hear from you since you're going through experience now. thx.! =)

I have used David Hinson for years as the one to do major and difficult repairs on my vehicles. David is an honest and diligent mechanic. He will only do what is needed and charges you an honest price. On one job, he underestimated the time it would take to do it and only charged me what he had quoted. I trust him completely. And he will be working on my wife's van next month to fix the CV joints.
