Some friends of ours in Houston forwarded this prayer request for their nephew who was just diagnosed with a seriously fatal form of cancer. I cannot type all the details, so I have pasted their email below. Please pray for healing for this young man, for comfort for him and his family in this devastating time, and for God to show his power in their lives. We all know prayer works, so I thank you for continuing to knock and ask for these things. -Kelly Recently our son-in-law, Dave Shea went to see a doctor about a large mass on his thigh. He had had it for about 3 years but it started bothering him and being sore about 9 months ago. At that time they were told it was a fatty mass, caused by an old injury and not to worry about it. They saw a surgeon that recommended that they just leave it because it was so large and so deep into his thigh muscle that it would leave a large hole in the muscle if they removed it. Lori was not satisfied with this diagnosis and asked that he be referred to someone else. He was sent to a sports medicine doctor in Madison who did an MRI. They hadn't heard anything as far as results but did get a phone call that they should call and make an appointment with an orthopedic doctor (we found out later and orthopedic/oncology doctor). They tried to call once but didn't get through. On Thursday, Oct. 11th our daughter Lori got a call from the doctor himself that said they needed to come in for an appointment right away. He thought that they had been told that the MRI had shown a spot on his femur close to his hip and they were concerned about the "tumor" on his thigh. They saw this doctor on Friday (12th) who scheduled a biopsy of the tumor for Monday (15th). He also did a chest x-ray which showed a few spots on his lungs. (They had seen these earlier on an x-ray in Platteville but were not concerned) On Monday I went with Lori and Dave and following the biopsy the doctor told Lori and I that he was very concerned and that it was very serious along with some other words of caution for Dave to be careful of his hip and take it easy. They were told they could call the office on Thursday (18th) for results. On Wednesday they received a call from their family doctor (whom Lori works for as a medical assistant) asking them to come in. He had results. Dave has been diagnosed with alveolar soft port sarcoma. This a rare form of sarcoma cancer. I hate statistics because they are only that but for this form of cancer the fatality rate is 9 out of 10 with a 1-5 year life expectancy from time of diagnosis. It was a devastating day and night for all of us. On Thursday they scheduled a full body ct scan and found 30-40 spots in his lungs. They had planned to biopsy the lungs but have decided to treat it as though it is the cancer and move on. On Monday (22nd) they will see another oncologist at UW Madison who will discuss treatment options and the plan of attack. They have been told they will hit it with all they have but that it is usually very resistant to chemo. Dave has now been told to use crutches to guard against a fracture to his hip and to take it very easy. As you can guess we have already gone through many emotions over this. Dave is 28 years old. Lori will be 26 in December. They have 2 little girls Jenna, who will be 3 on November 10th and Katie who will be 2 on January 26th. Lori is 16 weeks pregnant due on my birthday April 11th. Dave farms in Platteville with his dad. He has always been a very active guy and has felt fine except for his thigh pain. (the doctor feels that the pain is probably more from the hip and bone pain) I am asking everyone to please storm the gates of heaven with prayer on Dave's behalf. We have a gracious and merciful God who can perform miracles and we are seeking that for Dave and Lori. We (Dave and Lori, Dave's family and our family) are putting our trust in the Lord and we believe that He will care for our kids and get them through this. Please join us in prayer and tell anyone you know to add them to their prayer chains and prayer lists. Remember also to pray for Lori and this baby on the way. She is having trouble eating and sleeping. The doctor has now given her something to help her sleep. They have a wonderful group of friends from Bible study and church who are supporting them and we are thankful for that. I know that is lengthy but sometimes we are more apt to pray if we know names and details. I have claimed the verse at the end of my message as my life verse for the last 15 years and I will continue to do so. I know with all my heart that God is there for us and is taking ahold of our hands and He will help us get through this. For I am the Lord your God,who takes hold of your right hand and says to you, Do not fear; I will help you. Isaiah 41:13
