Can you explain to me how our free will relates to God's plan for us? Does he already know what decisions we are going to make based on our free will? Does he have a plan for us based on living in His way and a contingency plan for when we decide to make choices based on what we want rather than what His word says we should do?

To answer your 3 questions respectively...

1) No
2) Yes
3) Probably

Here I quote Dr. Hugh Ross, astrophysicist and apologist from his book BEYOND THE COSMOS:

"The bottom line is that we cannot expect to be able to form an adequate picture in our minds of how human choice and divine choice can both be fully operational, but if we accept both truths because the Bible teaches them and because God's extra-dimensional powers demonstrate the possibility of making sense of them, we can experience the challenge and comfort we need to live as God's children. We need the challenge of responsibility for our choices, and we also need the comfort of comprehending, even to a limited degree, how all things, including our unwise choices and others' choices that impact our lives, can work together for good, for the accomplishment of God's ultimate purpose and plan (referencing Romans 8:28)."

If you can digest that statement, it will help you get things in perspective. I'd also recommend an old book by Paul Billheimer entitled DESTINED FOR THE THRONE.

I often tell people: "Wherever you are, God always gives you a starting point to walk with Him - even if you've blown it." I know... because He's had to do that for me many times.
