Dear Pastor,
I am so excited about this series by Pastor Dave. I really enjoyed yesterday's topic and found answers to questions I did have. To be honest, I haven't seen or read the book because I didn't want to support what I believed to be somewhat of blasphemy. My frustration about the book/movie is this... while as Christians, we can decipher the truth from the fiction more clearly because of our faith in Christ. For unbelievers who are looking for the truth, it clouds their thoughts. It gives them one more thing to have to push through and find the truth to. I also chose not to support the movie because I obviously believe Christ and Mary to have never been married and not to have conceived a child. But, isn't it blasphemy to even say such things?... even in a fictional sense? The Muslim communities were outraged by cartoons depicting Muhammad, shouldn't we as Christians stand up in protest that a fictional book/movie has presented our Lord in a way that would cause many to question their faith?

I think most Christians and churches are reacting in a good way. Inviting people to ask questions and then showing people the Truth. The Bible even tells us to "test everything" in I Thes. and it says "always being ready to make a defense to everyone who asks you to give an account for the hope that is in you, yet with gentleness and reverence," in 1 Pet. 3:15 The key words to me in there is gentleness and reverence.
There are lots of things out there that test peoples faith and its a shame we aren't confronting those issues like we are on this topic. (Ex. teaching evolution as scientific fact in schools, desensitizing children to violence through the media, etc.)

The questions raised by THE DAVINCI CODE have opened up an opportunity for dialogue that doesn't come along every day. If the book by Dan Brown or the movie by Ron Howard presented itself as a documentary or work of non-fiction, we would be well in order to present a rebuttal. But since it is overtly presented as a murder mystery, a work of fiction, we can take it at face value and enjoy it as entertainment. The questions about "Who was Jesus?" and "Is the Bible reliable?" often go unasked. This entertainment event has allowed those questions to be asked out loud, and we need to take advantage and give reasonable and researched answers. Watching the movie or reading the book does not equal agreement with a false teaching. It equals inviting questions from a skeptical world... and that's a good thing for believers who want to share the truth.
