Pastor--

Im returning to school after 16 years to get my RN degree. My second class on Monday morning was Psychology and my instuctor wasted no time in breaking us in. He walked in late, set up his overhead projector, & passed out a quiz. After I mpletely failed the first quiz, he gave a definition of Psychology. It is different from the original definition of the 1800's. The 1800's version sounds something like..the study of the mind & soul. The current version is the study of behavior. He expalined that because "science" CAN'T physically see, hear, feal, smell, or see any reactions from the "mind or soul", it cannot be a "science". Then he use an example...if you can see something like a broken bone, then you can see how it is "fixed" then you can expaline it, hence you have a science. Then he looked right at me (why me!) and asked, "can you see a broken soul?", & "where would you go to fix it?". I then said, "I'd go to the BIBLE". He stated "do you mean that you would go to religion?" I stated "no, I'd go to the BIBLE.". He stated " so what you are saying is that you are bias?". I stated, "thats my answer to your question." After class I asked him where the book store was on campus and he told me to go to the next building and ask someone else. I dont think he wanted to help me. So, did I say something wrong? I always stand by my faith, but where was he going and how would you handle guys like this?

Right on, Margo. You spoke the truth. The prof did too. This psychologist actually admitted what the Bible says: "The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it? I the LORD search the heart and examine the mind..." (Jeremiah 17:9-10) Actually what he is saying is that psychology has failed by definition. The word psychology comes from a Greek compound word that means "the study of the soul (psyche)." I guess you could commend him for being truthful.

Realize one of the tools professors use to help you educate yourself is to make you question your assumptions; that can be healthy as long as you don't automatically accept their assumptions. They can be as wrong as anyone.

For more insight on psychology, I'm going to ask Miriam to give her response as well.
