How do you respond to someone who claims that there should be no different interpretations of scripture since it’s the same Holy Spirit that leads all of us?

In other words, if two people are “true Christians” (whatever that is…I guess meaning you yield and are truly led by the Spirit), then they both should understand scripture the same way. Is that biblical?

Thanks,

Candy

Well, one thing you could try is to say, "Well, I am filled with the Holy Spirit, so if you disagree with me, then you must be listening to some other Spirit." ;-)

I guess the only time I've heard this argument is when someone was trying to convince me that his point was true, and if I didn't agree, I must not be listening to the Spirit. The truth is: we're all humans, still struggling against our crucified sin nature. Sometimes our fallen nature gets in the way of coming into agreement. Sometimes, our "experience" filters are just different. Sometimes, our knowledge base is just different.

Proverbs 11:14 says, "Where there is no guidance the people fall, but in abundance of counselors there is victory." If communication from the Spirit is crystal clear, then why are we instructed to air opinions before others? In 1st Corinthians 14:29, prophecies were to be tested by a coucil of prophets. In Acts 15, Paul and Barnabas could not agree on a direction for their mission work and disagreed so vehemently, they split up and took separate mission trips. If they had disagreement, why would we not in our own day and age?

Matthew 18:20 tells us how we can come to agreement:
"For where two or three come together in my name, there am I with them."

Why don't we let Jesus bring us together?
