As a "baby christain" and a single mom I'm concern how serious should we take this Halloween event day? I've always given candies every year and taking my son to go trick n treatin' as part of a tradition. I know some christain moms and still allow to take part but only allow their children to dress up anything but witches or devils, etc.

Will anyone help me understand whether it is ok to still take part of it or not?

To answer your question I feel I need to give a little history. Halloween is rooted in the ancient Celtic feast of Samhain (sah-ween). The Druids believed that on the eve of Samhain the veil between the present world (those living) and the world beyond (those dead) was pierced, releasing demons and witches to harass the living. In order to make themselves immune from attack, people disguised themselves as witches, devils and ghost; they attempted to ward off evil spirits by carving grotesque faces on gourds illuminated with candles and they placated the spirits with a variety of treats.

I believe we can learn much from how the early Christians responded to Halloween. October 31st, the eve prior to All Saints Day, was designated as a spiritually edifying holiday (holy day)on which to proclaim the supremacy of the gospel over the superstition of ghosts. Thus, "all Hallows Eve," from which the word Halloween is derived, was an attempt on the part of Christianity to overwhelm the tradition of ghouls with the truth of the gospel.

I hope this was helpful. With truth there is little to fear.

I decided to take my little girls trick a treating this year for the first time but the only way I was going to do it was to give back to the people giving the treats. what we gave out was Heavan tracks that I loaded up on from my church back in my home town. Boy did we get alot of surprise faces and comments that they have never gotten anything from a trick a treater and I came to find out there was some believers on my block that were greatful that we were doing this. My oldest daughter was so excited to know that we were giving these out to people that might not know Jesus and that through our heavan tracks they just (Lord willing) might come to know HIM by what we did. So from now on My daughters and I are going to use that day to give out heavan tracks to the Treaters.

Thank you both for taking the time to respond with the history and the way you do with your child. I LOVE the idea you came up with on Halloween for the heaven tracks. Now that's thinking outside the box and thinking thru God's heart. Praise the Lord on that one!

I actually do that myself burning CD songs of christain/inspirational songs and passing them out to my friends and planning to do that with the single mom's group. But never would have thought to do that on Halloween...simply beautiful to share what you did on Halloween...look up b/c I can see God smiling at you.

Thank you both so kindly for sharing that with me. God bless.
