I was wondering if one of the pastors there could help me out with some questions I have about observing the Sabbath. I was raised in a family that are members of the seventh Day Adventist Church. The question that I have is what do you believe about observing such? I have been attending non-denominational churches for the past ten years, but I find it hard to understand why most denominations, and non-denominational churches observe the Sabbath on Sunday rather than Saturday? I personaly believe in living a non denominational faith due to other beliefs than just the Sabath day, but I still do believe in a Saturday Sabbath. Am I wrong? I do believe that serving, and living by faith in any matter is much better than being lost, but I still have a hard time not attending church on Saturday. My father is a very faith driven individual and the best man I have ever met in his ways. This makes it even harder for me being that his, and my mother's wishes would be that I attend a Seventh Day Adventist church. I do not thought because I believe all churches have flaws, and there are good people in every place. I also sometimes question calendars of ancient times, and is Saturday truly the 7th day? I have heard that the Sabbath was changed to Sunday by the Roman Catholic Church in later days, but I have yet to find verification of many of these issues. Like I said, I am not looking to move into a different church, just asking a question that I have had on my mind for quite some time.

We know from Revelation chapter 1, as well as other scriptures and historical documents that Christian worship shifted from observing the Sabbath to worshipping on Sunday, "the Lord's day." A tenet of the SDA church is keeping the 10 commandments, of which Sabbath observance is part. In Acts 15, we read the decision of the council of the apostles and elders of the primitive church, voiced by James the Lord's brother: "It is my judgment, therefore, that we should not make it difficult for the Gentiles who are turning to God. Instead we should write to them, telling them to abstain from food polluted by idols, from sexual immorality, from the meat of strangled animals and from blood. For Moses has been preached in every city from the earliest times and is read in the synagogues on every Sabbath." The teaching of Hebrews 4 indicates that in Christ we have entered into the "sabbath rest" with God. Jesus said in Mark 2 that "the Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath." The way I see it, the day of worship should not matter too much, because every day is the sabbath and should be lived to the glory of God. I hope this is not too simplistic, but I believe it is essentially valid.

I neglected to mention in my simplistic reply that BRCC has a Saturday 5 pm service which is within the literal Sabbath (at least during Daylight Savings Time). I also should have mentioned the whole context of the Acts 15 passage about the Jerusalem Council in which Peter argued: "...Why do you try to test God by putting on the necks of the disciples a yoke that neither we nor our fathers have been able to bear? No! We believe it is through the grace of our Lord Jesus that we are saved, just as they are." When they sent their instructional letter to the churches of the Gentiles they said: "The apostles and elders, your brothers, To the Gentile believers in Antioch, Syria and Cilicia: Greetings. We have heard that some went out from us without our authorization and disturbed you, troubling your minds by what they said. So we all agreed to choose some men and send them to you with our dear friends Barnabas and Paul— men who have risked their lives for the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore we are sending Judas and Silas to confirm by word of mouth what we are writing. It seemed good to the Holy Spirit and to us not to burden you with anything beyond the following requirements: You are to abstain from food sacrificed to idols, from blood, from the meat of strangled animals and from sexual immorality. You will do well to avoid these things. Farewell." So you see, there was no mention that they must keep the 10 commandments. Romans 8 speaks about the law that believers keep - "Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit of life set me free from the law of sin and death. For what the law was powerless to do in that it was weakened by the sinful nature, God did by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful man to be a sin offering. And so he condemned sin in sinful man, in order that the righteous requirements of the law might be fully met in us, who do not live according to the sinful nature but according to the Spirit."
