I'm looking to buy an old beat up motorcycle in working condition for my wife to learn to ride on. She said that she's really looking for something around 250cc made for street (not enduro or dirt) and esthetics are not important. I know that this is not your normal purchase request, but I thought that if someone had an old bike out in the garage that's just taking up space it might be good for her to learn on. Once she get's comfortable, we're planning on getting her something a little bigger so we can go riding together.

Thanks in advance for any replies.

This reply may be a little late but i love motorcycles/riding so much that i couldn't resist...... I am a 5"3' woman and learned really well on a buell blast. it's the harley-davidson version of a sport bike (you probably already knew that -sorry!) the reason is that it has a very low seat height-probably the lowest.it's very light in comparison to toher bikes ( check out the website for stats) it has very simple gearing. there isn't a forward leaning position like a typical jap bike but it's still very sporty. it's a 500cc and it actually gets up over 100 mph. another thing is that alot of people use them for beginner bikes so you can pick up a nice one used from e-bay pretty cheap---- not a couple hundred but more like 1500.00. i know this seems like alot but you can turn around and sell it for what you paid for it like i did. I actually loved mine so much that i changed the fairing, put saddlebags on it, and put chrome flames on it. no one could tell what kind of bike it was after that. it was sweet! Also, those 250cc bikes that they use at the motorcycle safety course don't really help in the long run. they aren't like the real thing. you might as well just get a bike that you can grow on and just go to an empty parking lot and practice riding in a low gear for a couple hours. even a hyabusa will go slow in a low gear ya know what i mean? If your wife is 5"5' or taller then i am so jealous because the sky is the limit for the long-legged. well, i hope this helped... keep the rubber side down!
