November is right around the corner.
When we think about November, we all think it's Thanksgiving month. We
have two kids. First one is a girl, second one a boy. When Jennifer
was born, they found a defect in her heart but it healed itself up in
days.
James had hypothyroidism, which was found about two weeks after he was
born. His thyroid just didn't function. A non-working thyroid means stunted physical and mental development. The doctors said they would
have to watch his thyroid levels with checks about every six months as
he grew up, and with a synthetic thyroid hormone pill every day for the
rest of his life, he'd be ok.
When he turned about five, sometime in March he caught a cold. I was
going to pray for him to get over his cold, but it seemed like I was
whining about why God would let my son catch a cold. As I began to
pray, I felt I should give thanks to God instead of whining about the
cold. I thought, "How can I give thanks?" I mean, my kid was sick!
He showed me why... because there are lots of diseases that are
incurable. I repented right away and gave thanks that he *only* had a
cold. I felt ashamed of myself for whining about such a small thing.
But I did pray for the cold to last only a short time.
He was sick for a couple of days but got better. After a few months,
his birthday came around so we went for his checkup. When they looked
at his thyroid levels, the doctor said that something looked funny...
his dose had been the same for a couple of years when it should have
been increased, since he was still growing up. She told us to stop
giving him the synthetic hormone for a few days while she checked with
the experts... but it looked like his thyroid *just started working*!
For those few days, we were really tense, watching James closely to
make sure he was ok. After a few days, we went back and the doctor
said he was cured... his thyroid just somehow started working! I got
chills and remembered what God said about giving thanks, and I now realized what he was saying. He didn't just
cure the cold, he fixed James' thyroid. He's now 14 years old, and almost as tall as his six foot Dad!
I just wanted to rejoice in the great God we serve! In the bible (1 Thessalonians 5:18), it says, "...give thanks in all
circumstances, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus." Sometimes the circumstances might not seem so great, but you find out later they really are, because everything is in His hands.
