My husband and I have decided to homeschool our 6 year old son. I'm having a hard time deciding on the curriculum I should use. My son is in first grade and the work is just too easy for him. I need something that will be challenging. If anyone would be interested in sharing their knowledge and/or advice it would be greatly appreciated. Also, any information on homeschool groups would be great. Thanks so much for any help that you can provide!

I suggest you think about and research different types of homeschooling to determine what "flavor" of homeschooler you want to be. Many many people are happy with Sonlight or Winter Promise. Does he have any subjects that he is particularly interested in? (Homeschooling is sort of an obsession with me. If you want to email me at jbatesedwards@yahoo.com I'd be happy to chat with you.)

Dear Candice,
I had to laugh at Teribeth's response because most of the homeschooling moms I know are a little obsessed with homeschooling, myself included. I do agree with what she said about finding out what flavor of homeschooling that you like. I have homeschooled my 8yo daughter since the beginning and was homeschooled myself for 3 grades. I like using the Calvert curriculum because it has been around longer than just about anyone else and I get school in a box with one teachers manual. I need the structure that Calvert offers. I feel that my daughter is a bit accelerated and the Calvert curriculum has challenged her. It is not a christian curriculum but I find that also works for us. It give us the "wordly" view of things, especially in science, and that gives me the opportunity to interject how we as christians deal with those things. I want her to be aware of the worldy perspective but be equipped to deal with it. A few of the moms I know are able to school almost free just by putting together materials on the internet and avidly using the library. I just didn't feel like that was my "style". I am happy to talk with you further about it if you like. My email is www.terzcota@sbcglobal.net.

I was wondering if there was the possibility of something like that at BRCC. We are looking for a new church home and so have just been visiting at BRCC. I would be interested in something like that although I already am a member of Northwest Home Educators.

My husband and I are new to homeschooling as well as BRCC (we just visisted there for the 1st time this past Sunday). We just moved to SA at the end of last month and are in need of a home church as well as a homeschool group. I had found a group called "Smoothing the way" but they only meet once a month and you can't take your kids. My husband works for Schwans so he works 12-14 hrs a day so I haven't been able to go to a meeting yet. I would love to go to their meetings because they are for new homeschoolers and I need all of the help I can get since I have no clue what I'm doing.

There is a group of homeschooling moms who have been getting together in recent weeks, and I'm sure they would love to meet others. Please email me at gfike@brcc.net and I will give you some contact information.

Dear Candice,
We use a classical educational approach, and it works well for us. I have a 7 year old and almost 5 year old. If you're interested, check out The Well Trained Mind by Jessie Wise and Susan Wise Bauer. Once I read that book - how to homeschool made sense to me. I have many of the recommended materials if you want to look at them. Best of luck in finding what works for you and your family.

If you are a homeschool mom wanting to connect with others for support, could you send me an email by clicking
HERE? I would like to see if we can help make a connection point.
