Subject: Acts 8:1-25

Significant verse:  8:23-24

What does the verse say?  A sorcerer named Simon believed in Jesus Christ and became baptized.  When the apostles laid hands on the believers, they also received the Holy Spirit.  Simon wanted this power and offered to pay for it.  Peter rebuked Simon for his evil thoughts, declaring he was "full of bitter jealousy".  Simon asked Peter to pray for him.

What is God saying to me?  Jealousy.  Wanting what someone else has.  Bitter jealousy.  Full of it.  Jealousy can hold a believer captive to sin and cause us to commit even worse sins (like offering to pay so you can give the Holy Spirit to people).  Lord, search my heart.  Is there any jealousy in me?  If I tolerate it, that jealousy will become bitter in my soul.  Lord, I believe you want me to be content.  Content with who I am.  Content with what I have.  Lord, forgive me of my jealousy.  Instead, I thank you for my blessings.
