Significant Verse: 20:3-8
What does the verse say? John noted several quirky details about Jesus' resurrection. When he and Simon heard Jesus' body was missing, John noted that he outran Simon to the tomb (guys always care about who's wins a race). John stooped and looked in seeing strips of linen, but didn't go in. Simon went on in, noticed the strips of linen as well as the cloth that was on Jesus' face lying neatly folded beside the linen. As a result of what they saw, John believed in Jesus.
What is God saying to me? A person who is making up a story or writing mythology doesn't take care to note quirky details such as those John records. An eyewitness does. And the details John noticed suggest that no one stole Jesus' body (who would unwrap a rotting, stinky body before stealing it?). Jesus came back to life and folded the cloth that was around his head. I believe because John believed and recorded with such care quirky details he remembered. As I read through John, I noticed how many times the word "believe" or "faith" (both the same in Greek) were used as the proper response to Jesus. It was 86 times. The message of John is BELIEVE in JESUS. A person becomes a child of God by receiving Jesus through believing (1:11-12). Lord, I believe. Thank you for making me a child of God.
