Significant Verse: 3:27-30
What does the verse say? When John's disciples noticed (with a hint of jealousy) that Jesus and his disciples were now baptizing more people than they were, John said, "God in heaven appoints each person's work." He then accepted his lesser place in that work when compared with Jesus' place and said, "He must become greater and I must become lesser."
What is God saying to me? John's humility amazes me. He recognized and accepted his place in God's kingdom. He didn't just accept it, he "was filled with joy" (v. 29) at Jesus' success. Lord, make my heart humble like John's. John accepted changing roles and changing influence and changing status. It was all about you, not him. Lord, forgive me when I allows my pride to swell and when I become self-absorbed. Lord, show me if I have tolerated pride in my heart. (The Lord showed me a situation where I was tolerating pride, and I confessed it and asked him to forgive me and help me feel joy at his plans and purposes.)
